Oscar nominations
We’re just a few minutes away from the Oscar nominations. As usual, the Academy will announce all the nominees in a no-frills news conference at 5:30 a.m. Los Angeles time–just so they can get on the early news shows. It’s such a retro way of doing things.
I was asked to go to Los Angeles to talk about the noms with Julie Chen, but I have commitments here in Chicago–primarily a charity poker tournament, with all proceeds going to Children’s Oncology Services. I was not going to take the chance that I wouldn’t make it back home in time for the event.

Marisa Tomei?
Again?
Really?
She was good in The Wrestler – BUT not THAT good!!

Uh, she was that good. Plenty of women have played strippers, some who have even dabbled in the profession – but none so convincingly. The emotion she conveyed in her final scene with Rourke, or when she comes back to talk to him again in the club – golden.

Everyone who rags on the Academy Awards need to get over themselves. All of these movies this year are brilliant and no one should be disappointed in the winners. If the movies bore you to tears maybe you should skip movies with taste and go watch Madea Goes to Jail and call it a night.
